Taking a Holistic Approach to Cancer Research with Multiphoton Microscopy

In this research highlight, Dr. Provenzano discusses his work defining the barriers to effective anti-tumor immunity in poor prognosis cancers and engineering cell therapies to break them down, as well as why multiphoton microscopy is a critical tool in his research.

"Something that I’ve found really exciting is the applicability of the microscope in immune mechanobiology work."

Summary

ABOUT THE RESEARCHER:

Dr. Paolo Provenzanois an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota.

He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining the University of Minnesota, he was a DOD Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin and a Research Associate at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

FIELD OF STUDY:

Dr. Provenzano’s research program focuses on the development of effective cancer therapies for poor-prognosis cancers and aims to understand:

  • The causes of immune exclusion in tumors;
  • What limits the efficacy of immunity and cell-based therapies; and
  • How to design and engineer better cell-based therapies.
